Location

Depending on where they are located within the alimentary tract, hemorhoids can be either internal or external. These are called internal hemorhoids if they are located above the dentate line in the anal canal. These are called external hemorhoids if they are below that line. Hemorrhoids can be classified according to their specific characteristics.

The first-degree type is an internal hemorhoid and remains attached to the walls. They bleed and send bright red blood out from the anus. The hemorhoids of the second degree protrude from the anus, but retract themselves. The third-degree type will require the finger to push them into their rectum. The fourth-degree type will always be outside the anus. These can be external or thrombosed hemorhoids.
